Our faithful livestock guardian dog, keeping the goats and chickens safe day and night (especially night, she barks non-stop from dusk to dawn...), Maremma - an Italian breed.

Maremmas are used in Victoria, amongst other things, to guard colonies of Little Penguins, Australasian Gannets and Eastern Barred Bandicoots against cats and foxes.

"Oddball" was the film - as much a travel documentary as a story (lots of lovely scenery miles and miles from Warrnambool, especially the Twelve Apostles).
But the basic stuff was there - foxes/dogs decimating the Fairy Penguin colony on Middle Island at Warrnambool, Victoria, and the dogs introduced to guard the penguins.

middle island - Google Search
