My understanding is that cats came to live with people when cats discovered that people have places called “granaries” where they store mice, and people discovered that even a well-fed cat will hunt mice for sport.

We used to have a cat named “Velcro”; I discovered that if she stared at a spot, there was probably a mouse nearby. At first I thought she was doing it by odor, but our daughters pointed out that she had a great memory. She had left her favorite toy mouse at my parents’ house {we thought she had lost it and purchased her another one}; the next time we went there {several months later}, she went straight to it.

Cats came to humans walking by themselves from the wet wild woods, but it could make a cranky child content, so it's been tolerated, except by dogs.

Our Laura cat used to assume the low crouch and stare under the mobile dishwasher. When the machine had to be repaired, I discovered a large mouse nest in it, packed with dry cat food pellets that one or more mice had been stealing from Laura's dish for many months. She knew they were there, and she was generally a good mouser, but SFAIK they timed their foraging to her times of deep sleep.

A couple photos taken to test my new flash (Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X R2 TTL Round). Nicki is taking a bath while Hertz is showing her typical chill personality.

Several years ago I walked past the laundry room and noticed our two cats staring at the dryer (which wasn't running at the time.) I thought "Cats are weird." A little later I walked past the laundry room again and the both were still staring at the dryer. "Hmm. I better check this out." There wasn't anything obvious on the front of the dryer so I opened it and see...nada. The dryer was empty. Then I heard a noise behind the dryer. I look behind the dryer and there's nothing there. Two hoses to the washer, an electrical cord to the washer and one to dryer and a dryer vent tube, just a flexible tube to vent dryer air outside. Then I see the dryer vent tube move. Uh oh. This is rattlesnake country. And the dryer vent, near the ground outside, would be kind of attractive to a critter seeking a place to hide. Now the washer and dryer side by side take up the entire width of the laundry room. And there's maybe two feet of space between them and the wall and there's a shelf above the washer and dryer. I have to get back there to disconnect the dryer vent. I disconnected the vent tube and rapidly, VERY rapidly scrambled over the dryer. When I looked behind the dryer I watched a ferret waddle out of the tube. The neighbor's pet had escaped and found its way to my dryer vent. The first thing I did (after returning the runaway ferret) was nail a screen over the dryer vent.

After my sister-in-law died we spent weeks cleaning out her house preparatory to putting it on the market. There was a bathroom downstairs that she never used, and it was filthy. The hose for the vent fan (there was a stall shower) seemed damaged and blocked. It was packed with chipmunk debris - nest stuff, poop, eaten and unopened acorns. Not cleanable, I had to replace it which was not easy as it was installed before the ceiling and walls were covered with sheet rock. BTW: This was on the lower level of a split-level ranch, so this floor was basically a half-buried basement that had been extensively finished.

After we moved twice and each time we found a mouse nest in the area we had kept the cats out of, I decreed that we would never again keep them out of any part of the house. Now, I take the cats on an escorted tour of the house every fall {when mice are especially likely to be looking for a warm spot inside}. “Escorted” because our usual reason for keeping the cats out is the presence of tools which could be dangerous to them.

Posted in the Pet a Day thread … I’m back doing the SIC so that means lots of cat pics. First I give you Dodger he’ll be 5 in August. A total ham and handful but I wouldn’t have it any other way. He likes to sit at the foot of my recliner - which means I have to be in the chair with my legs up. This is the look he gives me when he wants to sit on the recliner and snuggle next to me:

Came across this cat and mouse game at a local bird sanctuary. Some posted elsewhere on the Forum.

The mouse got away by climbing up the tree. The cat watched.

Climbed an adjoining tree to a better view

Said mouse, unperturbed!
