I hadn't seen this thread previously - now to go and drag some images out.

I noticed that the Australian and New Zealand balloons in pjv's and Mark's pix have aircraft registration nos. (VH-ZON and ZK-LAR respectively) but I can't see any on the balloons in the USA. Are they registered in the USA?

Edit: Curses, another batch of images lost. Must have happened when I had two HDD failures in quick succession, one being the new hybrid drive, the other being my external backup. I did have a backup but not an image backup. Time to buy another backup disk.

My wife gets annoyed with me when I spot, then tell her about, spelling errors in TV credits or programmes. The latest that I saw was a sign at JFK airport advising people about goods bought "aboad" - one assumes they meant "abroad".

I heard a loud " Whooshing " noise early this morning and went outside to discover these 2 flying VERY close to the ground and the house. . . . . . . . . . . . . The burners make quite a racket !!
Balloons are fascinating. Have you ever ridden in one?

I used to like the idea of them Racer, until a friend of mine asked me whether I would get on a bus that had no steering or brakes. I replied " No."
Then my friend asked " Then why would you get on a FLYING bus with no steering or brakes? "

Well, going up and down does mean you stop, and even change direction if you know the differing wind patterns at different altitudes.

I'd like to give it a go but the flights (at least here in Melbourne) are expensive.

Balloons have steering and brakes.

The wind steers them.

The Earth breaks them.

They are that clackers. Of all the people I know that have taken rides ( about 6 or 7 couples ), they all had the rides given to them as gifts by their kids
or parents

Once, many years ago. Was great. Because it's quiet, (except when the burner is going) you can hear sounds from the ground below oddly well.
Few years back there was a bad accident here by us with a balloon hitting power lines. See 2012 Carterton hot air balloon crash - Wikipedia

When I was at the local air show I walked right past the ultralights and paragliders on display/sale.

Perhaps quite unfairly in my mind they register as deathtraps.

Yes, it is expensive. I think I'll treat my wife and myself to a ride on our 50th wedding anniversary (not too long away).

Here's Patriot, owned by Barry DiLibero, of Modena, Pennsylvania. Patriot is close to 54 metres high, has a wingspan of 35 metres and weighs 449 kilograms. It's actually quite a bit larger than the real space shuttle.
Barry also owns Flighthouse, the lighthouse seen in my earlier post. Flighthouse is "only" 35m tall, so Patriot is pretty big in comparison.

Up to two pages! pjv's third image (the 'Zonzo' balloon) with the flame is very nice. The first thing that caught my attention in MarkJerling's images was the lighthouse balloon. In the lower left of that image is a balloon (bird?) partially obscured by trees. Do you happen to have any other images of that balloon? The Space Shuttle is really eye catching. I've never seen it before. Hopefully, it will fly at the balloon races here someday. Here's a few more.

"Hey, Mom! Look what I found in the back yard. Can we keep it?" (Who says you can't steer these things?)

Several years ago, I watched this kestrel

repeatedly attack the face of this panda balloon.
