That image so captures the way I think of hemlock groves. The combination of deep shade and perhaps some effect of the needles (allelopathy?) leaves much of the ground free of undergrowth, although here and there ferns or partridgeberry will establish patches.

That is a very interesting growth of lichens. SUGGESTION: if you come across it again, get in closer. I think an image covering just the upper area, with the yellow fringe to the right of the image you posted instead along the bottom of the image might be interesting.(= move the camera approximately to the two o'clock position of the image posted, and move int to include just that upper area of the lichen that has three purplish growths on top)
