Interesting. M and I do not gather wild mushrooms with one exception, Every now and then a morel comes up somewhere in our yard, and M cannot leave it uneaten.

I had two nice batches of morels this season.The whole family loves them. I also had a nice cream of mushroom soup with a slightly over mature pheasant back. You can very safely add pheasant back to your mushroom repertoire.

I've been rebuilding a porch that was pretty much wiped out by snow falling off the roof and missed my forest walks the last couple of days. SO back at her today.

1) A very large Jack-in-pulpit, with a leaf stalk about three feet (0.7m) tall and several flowers. Not possible to capture it properly in a photo.
2) partridge berry amid some Mayflower that was just coming into bloom. Both species now waning, although some little partridge berry blossoms endure.
3) a stump a common sight in our local woods as are stone wall/fences, indicating that MessyChewBits has more forest cover now than it did in the 19th century.

These "shelf fungi" have been developing on several dead trees along the trails where we walk.

Mountain laurel. There are two woodland places where we walk that have stretches with dense stands of mountain laurel. One that was spectacular a few years ago was almost a total bust this year. This trail was good, although not as fine as we've seen it.
