A couple months back I was visiting with family in Brazil... when at the beach we did a few walks in the woods. I should have taken more pictures, as there is such a huge variety of plants there... but at least I took some. This is from one of the walks...

The interesting thing to me is how the tree trunks and sometimes even the branches are all covered with plants. There's just a huge variety of plants that grow on other plants. Like these orchid-type flower plants covering this palm tree trunk:

Some of the flowers that are on these plants:

Here's a wild orchid

Here is a cactus flower, cactuses also grow wildly despite the humidity...

Finally, a wild lantana flower - these lantana plants can get pretty big down there.

All taken with the DA*16-50. I'll post more as I work on them... I found out my jpegs aren't worth sharing but luckily I had a 128Gb card in the K-3 to record all the RAW files...

My afternoon....

My outdoor time starts , usually with feeding the birds.... Pine Grosbeaks are over wintering at our feeders this year. A neighbour 1 km away doesn't see them, but has an infusion of redpolls.

The next chore is chopping wood for the night and bringing it in, there's a wee bit of snow on top of the wood shelter

Both these activities involve throwing tennis balls to border collies.

Then the walk starts

Fungi

Fungi on a cut tree

Jesse and Tripper Dawg waiting at the 'New path cut off" to see which way we're going. They wait at every path intersection.

All three Border Collies , we got one of each colour to make a complete set. It's really hard to get the red one.

A leaf.

Tia at Beach Tree Corners, almost home. 5,000 Fitbit steps for the whole walk. Maybe 4 km. at Beach Tree Corner the Old School Road intersects with the Dolittle path, which takes us to our path which leads to our back yard. I rarely see Tripper after this intersection, once he realizes we're going home he just boots it, and waits for us on the porch.

It was a tough walk today, sections haven't been walked since the last snow fall, and I had to break trail, going up hill, (both directions in my pyjamas, for those who remember the ad.) I toss the ball almost the whole way. Forward for Tripper, backwards for Tia, so there's no confusion who's turn it is.

Puffball remains

These huge white puffballs from this past fall survived the winter as fungus dust!

I've only seen the brown California towhee in our yard. Cute little guys, they do a kind of dance, kicking up the dirt looking for food. This sign is along the trails at Camarillo Grove park.

I used to see those fellows regularly when I was a student at Berkeley. There's an eastern towhee that has the same foraging behavior. I called it "scruffling" through the ground litter.
