There's crocus & snowdrops season, then lady slipper season which overlaps with trillium season followed by long-lasting bluets season, then comes mountain laurel and soon thereafter partridge berry season, now we're "in-the-pink" season with Dianthus abundant some places we walk. We always schedule a walk at certain places at certain times in the Spring so we don't miss the flowers

Partridgeberry, carpeting one particular area where we regularly take our AM walk although there is some along almost all the woodland trails and roads we use. In bloom for a long time. The vermilion fruit (a couple are in this image) and deep green leaves are also pleasant to see even far into the winter when not covered by snow.

With a not quite healed broken ankle, deep forest walks are not possible, so this is a view from a wider trail

A mushroom that grows on dead wood. The cap is fleshy rather than woody so these eventually shrivel into a an inconspicuous blob. The projection at the right looks somewhat like a turtle's head and right foreleg emerging from the mushroom.

I'm always glad to find one or more of these big, orange, fleshy (not woody) shelf fungi. They contrast nicely with the dark wood on which they almost always develop.
