Looking back from the rim of Kilauea Iki into Kilauea. In the distance just right of the rounded hill at the left you make out the rim of Halemaumau with some steam rising from it's floor. That crater in the past few days has become active and is now filled by a lava lake.

A five-story parking garage recently went up between some office buildings I pass daily on the way to work, or the dog park. They finished it in March, just in time for all those office workers to stay home. I just realized it would make a nice vantage point in such a flat landscape. I climbed the stairs to the top on my way to the dog park last Sunday, and I got to see my neighborhood from five stories up for the first time.

Lovely, isn't it?

The thing that looks like a giant pillow on the right is part of the training facility for the Arizona Cardinals. It cheers me up when I'm riding my bicycle home from lunch, and there goes a Rolls Royce Cullinan, a SUV starting at $330,000, wrapped purple. It was black when he first bought it, but that was too low-key for the football player.

Born with unusual physical abilities, but those had to be developed - not easy to do - but do such individuals do so much more good for us than a school teacher that they really deserve the obscene salaries they seem to take as a birthright (in fact a birth-gift)?

No, but I think the players are the wrong target for anger at the gravy train that is professional sports. They're not even the ones making the most money (see coaches and executives), and their careers tend to be very short (sources vary, average for the NFL is 2 to 4 years). Plus, most come from low-income backgrounds, and have no idea how to handle the money they make during the short time they get to make it. Speaking of the NFL here, four out of five players are broke within 3 years of retirement. They're just the coal that fires the gravy train, burnt up and thrown out the smokestack.

I have no idea how to make a society where people earn the most by doing the jobs we really need. But I do enjoy seeing a pearlescent purple Rolls Royce.

The gap for Malibu Rapids far in the background, motoring up to the dock at Chatterbox Falls in Princess Louisa Inlet.

Not a great technical photo but a great memory that gives some indication of the scale of the inlet.

Print scan, ME, probably shot on the M28 2.8.

The bleak landscape of Kilauea caldera. It's difficult to provide scale for something this large. It measure slightly less than 2X3 miles and just under 4 square miles in area.
