Originally posted by paulh What an amazing place. I spent a couple weeks on the North Island back in '92. Sadly, I was armed with only a cheap Vivitar 35mm p&s - and I don't even know where those prints are...
From November:
We were on a botanical tour - - many many plant images only a tiny fraction of which have identifications as the tour guide (an excellent one) would give the name, often both common & scientific, but who could write it all down fast enough and also properly connect 10~20 plants photographed at one location with the correct scribbled id, especially when we might visit three or more locations per day . At first I tried recording with a tiny digital device, then transcribing in the evening, but the outdoor recordings, with wind and other background noises, and sometimes not being up front, and not wishing to push the recorder into his face like a newsman interrogating a politician about the latest scandal, made the recordings pretty much unintelligible. So many NZ flowers, ferns, trees, cycads, liverworts, etc. when posted will be: "here's NZ plant, isn't it pretty/peculiar/spectacular/tiny/nice bokeh/whatever" but don't ask for its name.
