Aaron, I'm really enjoying your cars-and-models photo shoots on film.

I've only ever seen one of those Avanti cars myself. I was at a small car show in Oregon a couple of years ago, and there was a Studebaker club in attendance. I though it was really ugly, but I did get several pictures of it, so I guess I like it on some level. You won't mistake it for any other car, that's for sure.

I like what the owner had listed under "Outstanding Features":

More of the Studebaker club:

Studebakers never seemed to follow any design theme.

Some of their designs were pretty cool and forward-thinking, like the Super Hawk and the bullet-nosed model. At the other extreme were designs like that pink Lark! I guess that was targeted at the everyday, all-American family?

Look again. Aside from the Avanti, the other three follow the theme of separate “pods” for the headlights and radiator grille, if a bit muted in the Lark. The early Studebakers (such as the blue one in the series here*) were also quite singular in their appearance at the time, perhaps following Tucker’s lead in styling, to some extent. They were also the only car to appear in the Muppet Show, if I remember correctly – “A bear in its natural environment: a Studebaker!”

* Raymond Loewy designed that model.

Be still, my beating heart!

I know they’ve got a spine-crushing ride, and they’re hideously expensive, but I nearly bought one 40 years ago and I’ve regretted it ever since.
