Inspired by Thagomizer - here's an old film shot of moths (and others) around a light (in Namibia, as it happens)

appologies for scan quality

Sav, I hope you don't mind me calling you Sav.
I'm an Aussie and we never use whole names (well, in my case, not after my mother died).

Not at all. Even less so since my nick here is not my name anyway

Shortening/changing names seems to be common for all (more or less!) English speaking countries. The Swedes are fond of nicknames (or rather, ekenames), too. And the Russians are completely bonkers. It's not as common a practice around here, though.

My given name is just one syllable to start with - kind of hard to shorten it much further. Then again, if Dwight can be "shortened" to Ike...

If you mean the US general and later president, I suspect that the "Ike" was more to do with his surname - Eisenhower.
Our US friends might clarify that for us.

I knew a family where the mother named all her sons with one syllable names so they could not be shortened.
The wags at school soon gave them completely different names; Ron, Lyle, Leith and Clive became Ben, Todd... and I forget the rest.
The nicknames stuck for many many years.

On of my first shots from back when I got the Sigma 10-20mm (time flies!). Not the processing I would choose today, but hey, I was just thrilled that I could walk right up to the building and still get all of it in the frame
