Big bones washed up on a beach on Sea Lion Island, Falklands.

Different view of the same bone

A horse skull, maybe?

Bones on Carcass Island

Copper sheathing with nails washed up on Carcass Island. Maybe from an old wooden sailing ship (copper was used to protect the hulls from barnacles etc.)

Looks like some bricks too.

I live on the banks of a river, and during flood season lots of stuff washes up along the banks.

An old refrigerator door, car tires still mounted on rims, an old basketball, pretty much anything that people have made has been washed into the river upstream during flooding and deposited along the banks downstream, or washed out into Puget Sound where the waterway eventually winds up.

I have a small collection of bricks (and other detritus) from the late 19th century that have been left after the waters recede in the spring. There was lots of mining and logging here back then, and each time the river floods it takes more of the leftover mills and other structures left from that era.

Carcass Island is one of the most remote places we have ever been - the Falklands are 350 miles from South America and there's only one "settlement" (formerly just a sheep farm, now farming and a lodge) on Carcass. I suspect the bricks came from a former structure on the shoreline of the island itself. There have been a lot of shipwrecks around the islands over time and that's probably where the copper sheathing came from. A desolate place to be sure, but lots of history, and wildlife (posted elsewhere).

A very different beach walk. We were at Walkerville when a storm rolled in, with some lightning. Didn't have my tripod, so I went for a wide angle and the longest exposure I thought I could manage handheld, 1/4th second. Fired a series of about 10 or 12 shots, then bingo! K-S2 and DA 18-135. (X-posted from the bad weather thread.)

Glad you were able to get the lightning before it got you!

Di did suggest that standing on the beach taking photos wasn't a great idea, but I couldn't help myself. It was just starting to rain when we got to the car. Bucketing on the way home, sheets of water on the roads with lightning and branches down everywhere. Lightning struck a tree a little ahead of us on our road. Our power was off for 6 hours. Quite a storm.

Thanks very much Ray. A little educated guesswork and a lot of luck.

Believe it or not there really is a popular beach (in summer) under all of that.

Many thanks indeed Ray.

When it comes to landscapes in Tassie, it was Peter Dombrovskis who shaped the way we see it.
