However, the F*300 is almost on par optically, only slightly slower, and is tiny by comparison. The built in hood is really nifty too. If size matters, and you can find one, go for it.
comparatively, they are roughly the same price, here and on eBay, etc....

while I am not afraid of a manual focus lens, is the autofocus worth $200 - 300, when I can find an M* or A* 300/4 for less money?

Pepper, I've been using a M 200mm lens with a 1.4 TC attached and using CIF. It works great this way to photograph my birds and squirrels.

Here's one shot using CIF

living out here, I have many opportunities to shoot deer, coyote, raptors at rest and on the wing, and many times I find that my DA L 55-300 just is not enough lens for the job...

Probably about 200ft. I haven't tried this at the river parks yet. The birds are further away down there. I'll see what I can do with tomorrow at one of those parks, then post in flicker for you to see. If you want to see that is.

that would be awesome - do not put yourself out for me on this, but if you are out shooting, that would be great...

I own the DA* 200 and an FA* 300 f4.5 as well as the HD 1.4x teleconverter. The DA* 200 with the teleconverter is perhaps slightly less amazing than the 300. But it is really nice to have the flexibility.

No problem. And I'm always out shooting. But I was planning on going to the parks tomorrow because I'm running out of things to photograph in my back yard.

I know Kai isnt everyones cup of tea... but we are 9 days away from Fish Eye April and several of us are shooting WIDE this month, so I thought I'd share this segment which is tame as far as Kai Wong goes, but really hits some very good points about shootin Wide and Ultra Wide FoV....

I'm looking forward to April. Hopefully today I'll have some time to shoot.

EDIT: Having watched the video, I"m pondering using the 17mm Takumar Fisheye instead of the Rokinon 8mm. I love them both, but the 17mm is so compact, it's easier to walk around with and less intrusive in crowded areas or for street shots. IT is not as fishy as the 8mm is on the K-5, decisions, decisions!

BTW, during the rental of the K-1, I put the 17mm on, and it was fun!

Pepper, I hope you're not in a hurry because the tide won't be just right until Saturday. Since I don't shoot between the hours of 11am and 2pm, low tide when the birds come to the park, won't be until after 2pm on that day.

Saturday will be the last day of rocketry before the team goes to NASA in Huntsville, Alabama. I wish I was going with them, but it has been great to capture the launches and the teamwork these college and high school students have exhibited. this will only be the 3/4 scale test rocket, but I hope the full scale model will be on display, because it has been painted with a unique and eye-catching paint scheme that should be shown off.

I failed to post yesterday as I did not get home until about 11:30 pm from work and a generally intense day. I tried a couple of quick shots but decided to spare everyone and just enjoy other folks work. Hopefully, I will be able to focus on something to shoot this evening.

I'll be on vacation during the first week of April. I ordered a Pentax D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6ED DC WR HD today that I will be using for the trip and plan on singling it in April.
