KP & Sigma 18-300 DC EX HSMThe south side of the railroad bridge crossing the Conemaugh River and State routes 56/403 is normally severely backlit during the afternoon. I took advantage of heavy overcast and snow flurries to capture Norfolk Southern RR trains crossing the bridge from this seldom photographed angle. The large storage tanks were part of Bethlehem Steel’s Johnstown works and are now owned by welding fabrication company JWF industries. 1-30-22
Note: This bridge trapped many of the homes, farms and businesses washed downstream by the May 31, 1889 Johnstown flood. Stoves and lanterns set the debris on fire burning many people trapped in the tangle of debris to death.
