Post Processing Challenge #220 - Unicorn Wannabe

Thanks again to Arizona Dave for nominating me for this round. This week it's going to be retro equipment week, with an almost 50 year-old lens and a 10 megapixel CCD sensor. Yikes!

This was shot with the Super Takumar 20mm/4.5 on the GX-10 badged version of the K10D, which is a combination that I still use regularly and still love. It was one of those dark and gloomy Dartmoor days, but then just as I walked past Feather Tor there was a break in the clouds and this heavily pregnant white pony was lit by a burst of intense sunlight. I just had time to set Sunny 16 and shoot one frame before the moment was gone forever, and the resulting raw file has been my own personal post processing challenge ever since. White Dartmoor pony hair is the most reflective substance in the universe.

I'll let the challenge run for a week and then close it on Tuesday 16th May. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Have fun!

Tim

Nor have I. Given the subject matter, I settled on a storybook look:

Loving the results so far! We've got noonicorns (as little Violet calls them). Still lots of time to get your versions in by Tuesday, and multiple entries are welcome.

Great photo!

Seeing these two together now is making me kind of queasy, LOL. But it was fun while it lasted.

Thanks to everyone for your different interpretations of the photo. I've loved looking at every single one of them.

atupdate - The vertical crop works well and you've definitely captured the feeling of Dartmoor in stormy weather.

dcshooter - Almost like looking through a stained glass window, with such beautiful colours.

Glenn5995 - Sort of feels like a medieval tapestry look, which I think suits the photo well.

Arizona Dave - I think you've found the perfect crop, and the B&W in particular is really beautiful.

astonm - I wanted to see a unicorn's horn, and you gave us heavenly rays of light too. Love it!

D1N0 - By flipping the photo you've made the pony read more naturally from left to right, although seeing Feather Tor back to front makes my head spin. Somehow the horn seems quite natural.

todd - You've pulled out a really impressive amount of sharpness and detail in such a tight crop from only 10 megapixels.

JHfwp - I love both those versions, particularly how you've brought out the shadow detail.

And the winner is. . . JHfwp! Your colour version with the slightly faded film-like look makes it feel like a beautiful memory from long ago, and the analog effect does a great job of disguising the underlying technical flaws in my original raw file. Love it!

Thanks again to everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing what JHfwp comes up with for round #221.

I didn't expect to see a winner named when I logged on, let alone be that person! I had fun with this, not trying to bring out the best in the photo, but trying as you said to make it feel like an old childhood memory. Glad you appreciated it!

Thank you for hosting this week, giving us an inspiring photo to work with, and for taking the time to comment on everyone's great work.

I will try and get a new photo up sometime either late tonight or tomorrow.
