Single in August 2017

Welcome everyone to the Single In August 2017 Challenge!

Theme days:

Saturday 5th August: BACKLIT

Saturday 12th August: BLUR

Monday 21st August: B/SELFIES

Saturday 26th August: MULTIPLE EXPOSURE

Aim of the Game:To use the same lens each day for a month, posting one picture captured each day with that lens. The picture must be captured with a Pentax lens coupled to a camera body of your choice (including Pentax/Ricoh), a non-Pentax lens provided it is coupled only to a Pentax or Ricoh body, or a Pentax-Ricoh point&shoot camera. (Taking other pictures with other cameras/lenses is fine, but these won’t be eligible for this Challenge).

Commenting: Posting your pictures allows other participants to comment on them. Conversely, it’s hoped that you will comment on those of other members. Please don’t be shy if you don’t have much photographic experience or are a Forum newbie - your personal reactions to photographs are as valid as anyone else’s. It’s a very friendly group and with regular commenting, you’ll soon be enjoying the camaraderie.

The rewards: It’s great fun. You’ll learn heaps about how your chosen lens can perform and you’ll see what other members achieve with their selected lenses - sometimes the same one you’ve chosen. In the comment banter you’ll pick up many tips on photographic technique generally, including post processing. As the month progresses it often becomes quite demanding (it’s a challenge, remember) but you’ll always be encouraged by other participants. Worried about LBA? - this game doesn’t help you fight it!

How to participate:

1. First you need to join the Group to be able to post pictures; you only have to do this once. The group’s name is “Monthly Photo Challenges”. You’ll find a clickable link on that forum page to join.

2. You’ll need to have your pictures stored in an on-line album. This could be the Pentax Forum, or others such as Flickr, Picassa etc. You actually post a link to the picture in your album into the daily picture thread.

** If you are linking to a Pentax Forum album, you’ll find advice on how to post elsewhere in the Forum and in the FAQs below. One of the Challenge’s stalwarts, patjp, has also prepared a short video on how to do this - it’s on YouTube (Singlein.m4v)

** If you are posting a link to Flickr, just click on the sharing icon below your selected picture and a window will open displaying the BB code. Copy it and paste into the Single in (month) Challenge thread in the Pentax Forum.

Each day, you’ll see a new thread of pictures grow and by clicking on each you should be redirected to the photographer’s parent album where you will be able to add a comment and read those of others. When you post each day’s picture to the Pentax Forum, please specify the camera/lens combination underneath your picture eg K5 & DA15 Ltd - this makes it easy for others to note what combo you’re using.

The thread you’re painstakingly reading now is the Discussion Thread for Game > Single in (month).

This is separate to the picture posting thread referred to above and you’ll probably want to subscribe to the Discussion one to keep up with activities and develop a rapport with Challenge members. It’s the place where you can ask questions, offer advice, share concerns, suggest improvements, and often just participate in general banter related to this month’s challenge.

So there it is. It is easier than it might seem at first. If you miss a day, don’t worry. If you have any problems, please ask. We’re a very friendly, forgiving, international bunch. Come and try!

FAQs: Finally, Zorglub has kindly posted a FAQ collection here …. The FAQ - Monthly Photo Challenges - PentaxForums.com

Dipping out again this month, as for most of it (if not all of it) I will be on call and must remain within cellphone service areas, which means very little scope within which to use the more interesting lenses I haven't singled with yet (e.g. 17mm/3.5 RMC Tokina, 400mm/f/6.3 M42). Plus: hideously overworked. Sorry.

The annual audit is almost over (hooray!), so I should have more time in August to seek out shots. Going to go with a long fixed lens this time - a vintage Soligor 200mm f/3.5. It's an old T2 mount - and the T2-to-M42 mount adapter requires that I press a button on the side to stop down the aperture. Should be fun.

I'm in, the last part of this month has been a wash, I'm hoping next month will be better. At least late August is usually a bit cooler. To be truthful this challenge makes it hard to not go out and shoot. Lately I've needed all the encouragement I can get. Since this month has been big tele zoom, I think I'll go with a small wide angle prime, the inimitable FA 31mm limited. I've shot with it some with my K-1 but this will be the first time I've focused on it (pun intended).

Maybe, maybe not. Not sure yet. Daughter has a birthday this month, going to be 50 and I will probably get over to her house in Tampa around the 7th, that might make some interesting shots, but at this point I'm not sure about the rest of the month as it is our most hot month. I'm not sure which or what lens. I've got a Tamron 28-70mm I haven't used yet. Just got the adapter to install and it's a PK/A adapter. We'll see. Got to finish July first, eh.

I'm wanting to do it this month, but as photolady said, this is our hottest month. I've got my HD DA 20-40 and really want to have a go at it and give it a good work out. I've got the first week off from work, kind of a mini vacation where I stay at home, so I should have a good start. We shall see what happens.

After doing the Daily challenge for a while I think I'll jump back in to the Single for August, the Jupiter 9 for a month should be fun.

I am in this month. Traveling in June / July plus the preparation before and catch-up afterward kept me out. Not sure what I am going to single with, but cleaning the office tonight so I'll choose as I clean.

New/used Tamron 28-70mm is out of the running. Got adapter on, tried a few shots, come up overexposed no matter which f stop I use. Don't think the adapter is installed correctly even though I can see the blades show wide open or closed down. And now I can't get the adapter off the lens.

I might throw it on the MarketPlace here and ask very little for it.

Maybe the FA 100-300mm this month. I'll let you know for sure soonest.

I decided to have a go with the Pentax FA 100-300mm with a 1.7x TC attached and lens set at 200mm.

Nobody ever said you had to spend the entire month on one focal length; just the same lens.

I knew that!

I just think the 1.7x TC works better at the 200mm rather than 300mm where f stop is better and it allows the lens to focus without hunting.
