Great pics! I stayed close to home and we didn't have totality here.

I shot from my office roof and then walked around town a little looking for interesting shadows.
~90%

The shadows were my favorite part

Wow, I never even thought about the difference this would cause in shadows. Very very cool!

Here's another from yesterday, a single low light exposure just before the sun reappeared. It's heavily cropped to magnify the solar plasma ejection activity that can be seen.

I'd like to start a mini challenge to see who was able to capture the best eclipse photo! If course not everyone was lucky enough to see the totality, but it was still a spectacular sight. Still working on my shots so I will add them in a reply.

The format of this challenge will be like any of our other weekly challenges, and it will be open until the 28th.

Please "like" others' posts to indicate your favorite shots!
Attached are my shots from VA - we were only at about 80% max. The first nine shots are with the k-5 with a 3.0 ND filter, Pentax k 200mm f/4 with 2 vivitar 2xTCs taken at f/8 to f/16 and 1/350 to 1/8000 sec most were about EV-1 or -1.5. I thought those were okay, but I also had the k-01 with a sigma 300mm A and a solar filter. Very few of these were any good.

The last one in the series is an example. The solar filter came with wrinkles in the filter. The instructions say not to worry they will straighten when the sun hits them and they won't affect the pictures - many commenters on the web site selling them confirmed that. Well I cannot! The ripples drastically affected the pictures as the example shows. May I didn't let it heat up enough but for whatever reason great distortion.

Thank you for running the contest Adam. Everyone seemed to shoot something that they can point to with pride for the rest of their lives.

I've included some signage near the Denny's Restaurant in Carbondale, the place I choose to shoot from after I rolled into town at 3 a.m. on E-Day.

I blogged about my E-Day experiences. If interested, you can find it here: Chasing the Shadow in Carbondale

Thank you and congrats to everyone's fine photographs in a once-in-every-seven years event. See you in 2024!

Found and added couple of my photos that revealed Regulus. It appears at the 9 p.m. position next to the face of the sun/moon combination. Regulus is four-star system, almost 80 light years from us and shines at a magnitude 1.36. The so-called "heart of the lion," Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation of Leo the Lion. In the northern hemisphere, Leo rises is an early spring constellation. When we see Regulus rising in the northeast in the early evening, we know that we've seen the best that winter can dish out and spring is coming quick.

Wow! There are some absolutely spectacular photos up here so far!

My humble offerings were taken from the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Salem, Oregon. I had my K50, Promaster 70-300 zoom, and an ancient 2X TC. Solar filter was the Mylar universal style from B&H (I also got some to put on our good Bushnell binocs, which was a great viewing tool!). Shooting with 2s shutter delay I managed to get pretty good results. During totality, I used my K100D and our old SMC 80-200 zoom. Managed a few keepers with it. Crystal clear skies, cheering crowds, apocalyptic traffic jams heading back towards Pugetropolis! My album with all shots is at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1443890105672131.1073741861.100001...1.

Near the start:

The Banana Sun:

A tiny bit left:

My diamond ring shot (2s delay made it a little brighter than I wanted, and the focus is off a hair from when I removed the filter during totality - next time use lots more tape!):

Corona captured on the feeble old grey-haired pappy camera:

My submission is this shot, Diamond Ring with a starburst (and some lens flare, but I kinda like the effect):

Since I didn't get totality in my area I was more interested in the shadows and lighting:

The Diamond Ring

I left the house at 0400 to drive 35 miles south from Portland and try to find a nice open space in the eclipse path. I spent the next 7 hours alone in a field with a great view of the eastern and southern sky. What a terrific experience, likely once in a lifetime for me.

I'd never tried solar photography before, but decided to try a 4x4 solar filter (16.5 stops) on my DA* 300mm. The quality of that lens is really superb. I set up for auto bracketing, 5 shots each, aperture priority so I could control the ISO, and took photos from start to finish. This is the best of the lot.
