Post- Processing Challenge #248 Tacoma Rail Yard

Glad to get "back on track" with this next challenge...

Things can get a little gloomy up here in the Pacific Northwest. But sometimes that gloom just adds a special touch to the industrial side of town. This next challenge is a fresh shot (less than 24 hours old!) of the rail yard in Tacoma, Washington. Taken from the "D" Street bridge. k-3 + 15mm Ltd.

Yeah, all sorts of things could be better - it was pouring rain, my hands were freezing, shooting a moving train through a chain-link fence on top of a vibrating bridge whilst running out of daylight.. but hey... that's YOUR job now to make it look better! Have fun & bring out the best in it.

For a full week, let's end this next Sunday Night Feb 4th midnight Seattle time. PST.

Nice challenge! Really great shot, Laurie... lots to play with

Here's mine. Processed in LR6... straightened, vertical perspective adjusted, cropped to 16x9, highlights dropped to make it gloomier, short and very wide radial blur filter centred on the front of the train to create a "miniature" effect, graduated filter to reduce exposure from the left, strong vignetting plus WB / exposure / colour / contrast / clarity / saturation & tone curve adjustments.

This is one of those photos that I could come up with a 100 different versions of, all different, and I'd still be tempted to go back and try again

Great photo to work with. I think I could crank out 100 versions myself and still not tire of it. (So into the recycle bin my copy goes before I actually do!)

Went with a 4:5 crop to place the departing train on the bottom left third point, then played around doing some trial and error on what each option provided before settling on this version. I used On1 Photo RAW to set the white/black points, reduce the light in the sky to ensure the rain clouds were more ominous. I then focused on introducing contrast, sharpness and colour selectively and applied a split tone, bleach bypass filter and a texture in the sky. Finished with a vignette with a broad feather.

For this challange I tried something a bit different from my usual stuff.
16:9 aspect ratio, bold colors, lens glare and a "sprinkle" of clarity, plus I removed the pole on the left.
Am I happy with the result? Not too sure... but was fun.

Lightroom CC + Photoshop CC

Great pic astonm!! When I saw this pic, I instantly registered for the site to add my contribution. I live in the PNW, as well, and felt an immediate familiarity with those gray clouds and puddles This is all done in ACR, mostly with dehaze and clarity and some subjective tweaking of saturation (pulled out of the bg and a little added to the train); I wanted the bright orange of the train contrast against the gloomy background/surroundings. I cropped out the left side, even though I liked the weight of the light pole. I'd love any feedback or critiques!

Seeing you asked:

G'day and welcome to the forums and the PP Challenges. There's a new challenge every week or so, so keep an eye out for the next one.

So far as your image goes, I will leave the critique to the host but must say I'm liking the heavy rain clouds, they look particularly ominous.
