I was a bit lazy yesterday and had run out of ideas when I'd decided to do a pano with the DA 70mm LTD on the K-1 whilst fitted with a B&W ND110 10 stop filter. I was concerned the software would not be able to read the centre part of the pier correctly so the image is not real tall but the original is just under 31,000 pixels wide. So for those wondering what the entire length of the Shorncliffe Pier looked like, wonder no more.

Cheers Arjay. There was an incoming tide when I was there so I decided to stay high and away from the saltwater spray which was getting more of an issue in the time I was there. And it's funny you mention the birds as there's about half a dozen sitting on the pilings in this image that I'd not noticed until I was processing the image later on.

Technically this is a breakwater, neither a jetty nor a pier, but it is akin to a jetty. It's protects the harbor at Rockland, ME. Three verions.

1) with a Samyang TSS 24mm used to get DOF
2) fish-eye version almost but not quite defished
3) fish-eye version from a lower perspective, cropped and only mildly defished
The first was taken from the land end looking out toward the lighthouse at the end. The two fish eyes were taken from far out near the lighthouse looking back toward land.

I think I like the last version best. Does this demonstrate the advantage of exploring a subject with different lenses and different perspectives?

Yes. Tas's exploration of the Shorncliffe pier is underlining the same point. BTW, I like the third one best too Walt.

It does indeed, and this type of subject justifies the use of a wide angle lens. My favourite is the leading line created by the second version, it has a more natural sense of walking along the breakwater. And maybe one for next time is creating the first image again, but then creating a second to the right of frame. A square composition with the wall on the left third works neatly into the theme of your comment.

Cheers Des, I am a bit of a fan of Shorncliffe especially as there's two choices in close proximity. There's a third jetty I haunt up that side of Brisbane at Woody Point. It sits nicely clear of land in to the east and west and even when there's cloud if it's moving quickly an ND filter can open up a number of options. For example I've already posted an image from the trip I captured the first image here, but this one I worked differently and really like the cool look so went with it.

Of course clouds at Woody Point don't need a 9 stop ND filter to make a statement.

I like the mood of the second image. both the couple looking happy on a fine day, and the antique look of the sepia tone

It appears that that pair of pier pictures is without peer. Now, if they only included a pear.

Afterthought on the second image - - it's a picture of a memory.

Seisia Wharf - slack tide and a waxing moon means lots of fish. (Cross posted with the B&W thread)

a nice lot Craig; very atmospheric.

(but why would anyone use a surf rod from a jetty?)
