If resetting the cameras improved your results, it's almost certainly because the camera settings previously selected weren't appropriate for the shots concerned. There's so much that is adjustable, and if you're shooting in-camera JPEGs, there are even more settings that can affect the end result over and above basic exposure elements of shutter speed, aperture and ISO level.

If you want to do this with in-camera JPEGs, HDR is the way to go. That will take multiple exposures at different settings and combine them into one image (actually, that's the same approach you use when shooting RAW - it's just that the camera combines the multiple exposures for you, rather than you doing it in post-processing)
