Some subjects are so far away that infinity focus is all you need.

Not a big challenge. Some subjects aren't moving or don't move much.

The real challenge is when the subject is small

Or moving towards or away from you.

Manual focus skills need lots of practice. (Or an age that predates autofocus.) It's a skill worth developing. There are many situations where autofocus will fail you.

I've been shooting more with manual focus than with af recently because I'm using film cameras more and more (super program, but even the ones with just one central point dont really work better than mf for me).

But I'm posting one of the most challenging situations I was in. At the time my longest lens was the m 200/4. This is from Shakespeare in the park, shot at f4 on digital apsc with the standard focusing screen. It's not cropped much and there was of course enough stage movement to make it challenging.

This was taken in 1990 with an Olympus OM-1 and probably a 28mm lens (MF of course). Focus in caves was always a challenge, we had some tricks but still missed it a lot. My few experiences with cave photography since I have had a DSLR have shown that AF is tricky in caves. I did recently get a wickedly bright "Stanley FatMax" flashlight that may be a good tool for MF or AF. I just haven't been in a cave with a camera lately.

Dude! Get on it man! LOL! The more people share the better. It started out as a 'contest' to try and get people to do different things, but eventually this might be pic sharing thread.

There is plenty of time.

Field After an Ice Storm Shot with the M-28mm at f16, with the photographer shivering in the raw 20-degree temperatures. I added a textured sky in PP to make up for the uniformly gray overcast. Not sure that works in this setting.
