Best campsite on Penn Lake, Algoqnuin Park canoe camping.

My favourite spot, up on the hill over looking the lake.

Down by the fire pit.

Improving the stone pier.

Playing in the water.

Thanks! I've been in the world of tarping with trekking poles recently, and am looking for something light that is quicker to put up.

Putting it up takes a bit of getting used to, and you need tree behind it for maximum space utilization towards the back of the tent, (see the rope at the back of the tent) but it's fine without it. And you can't put it up on rock or shallow soil. But for us, it's the best compromise we've come up with in 40 years of back country camping.

I haven't been backcountry camping since 2003 and quit using the tent trailer in 2005, but as I posted earlier in this thread, my wife and I split our nights on a trip to the Yukon in 2016 between hotel rooms and a small dome tent. Three nights in provincial or territorial campgrounds, three nights in private campgrounds. On our first drive to Haines Junction, we couldn't get a site at the Pine Lake territorial campground and every motel and BnB was booked six months in advance. The local private campground had lots of available sites, mainly because their water pipes had frozen over winter and the health board hadn't given the approval to turn the taps on. Other than having to fill our water jugs at the bar down the road, there was nothing wrong with our tenting site, but the electrified RV sites fit the "million dollar view in a two bit campground" description.

What do you do when it rains?

Tripper always helps out with the firewood.

The Nipissing River and sections that had to be walked.

Home away from home.

The highlights of this trip were the sunsets.

It's a form of calcium carbonate called 'tufa'. It's pretty common around Pyramid lake in Nevada.

The Needles at Pyramid lake are tufas

as are the formations at Mono lake in California
