Something I've never seen in my yard. Not for this area of Florida, that I know of anyway, Sir! Perhaps too hot here for them to grow.
Well that's a fine challenge for you, grow one especially for this thread.

When I lived in Minnesota, there were plenty of them there. In fact, I got photos of them with butterflies sipping atop them. But here, it's entirely too hot and humid, not to mention the extremely salty air we have on this eastern coast, for them to grow.

I took this photo just before the Neighborhood Association made me remove them - around here, these are simply weeds.

The one that's the National flower and emblem of Scotland, it appears to have different names around the globe.

Weeds maybe, but saved the Scots on occasion from marauding Norseman.

Wait--how did that work exactly? It conjures up a Monty Python bit with fearsome-looking vikings prancing about in the thistles going, "Oooch! ouch! OW!! Screw it--let's go home!"

As I said in the first posting... "Legend has it that at some point during the invasion the Norsemen tried to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen. In order to move more stealthily under the cover of darkness the Norsemen removed their footwear. But as they crept barefoot they came across an area of ground covered in thistles and one of Haakon’s men unfortunately stood on one and shrieked out in pain, thus alerting the Clansmen to the advancing Norsemen."

So now you know.

It seem they do serve some purpose other than dyes for kilts.
