Universal Repair, 1611 Boylston Avenue, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.
Universal Repair was opened in 1923 as a Ford Model T repair and maintenance shop. At some point the business began repairing shop tools, hydraulic jacks, air tools, power tools. Eventually the business found lucrative work repairing and maintaining airless spraying equipment used in construction.
The son of the original proprietor took over, and then, ultimately the grandson, who runs the business today.
With the advent of low cost tools imported from overseas, tools are no longer repaired, but discarded when they fail, as the poor quality imported tools are not rebuildable, and it isn't cost effective to spend $200 to repair a $100 tool.
So after more than 100 years, this business will be closing soon.
Sad days.
