I was finally able to photograph this one. The second photo is a bit blurry because it was taken from a moving car and I had to just shoot and hope for the best!

Wroxeter Roman City

An entire city past its best. Near modern Shrewsbury and known to the Romans as Viroconium or Uriconium. It was the third largest city in Roman Britain. The upstanding wall was part of the side of the baths.

The Shropshire poet A.E.Housman wrote of it :

To-day the Roman and his trouble
Are ashes under Uricon.

I spent my summers for five years excavating there. Happy times. It isn't, however, the third largest city. That honour goes to Verulamium (near St Albans). London was the biggest, Cirencester 2nd largest.

I have posted photos of the replica of a Roman Villa which has been constructed there
Show us buildings, structures, heck, architecture inside and out - Page 57 - PentaxForums.com

I knew of the lines "... are ashes under Uricon" which is a phrase heared sometimes, but only in the site museum did I learn that A.E Housman wrote them and that "Uricon" was here. Housman's more familiar lines :

On Wenlock Edge the wood's in trouble
His forest fleece the Wrekin heaves;
The gale, it plies the saplings double,
And thick on Severn snow the leaves.

... are the opening words from the same poem, a slightly surprising combination. I thought that might be the Wrekin in the background of my photo of the ruins.

Yes, that's the Wrekin in the background behind the Old Work. We walked there one morning to see dawn, the walked back in time to start work at 8am!

Best wishes, Kris.
