These are from last winter (and previously posted) - you will have to wait a few months for some fresh ones!

Still a couple of months before snow returns to southern Ontario, but in the meantime I offer up one of my all time favourite snow crystal images.

Soon a few trillion of his friends will be back to pose for me once again.

Try downloading this image and rotate it 180 degree. See what happens to the inner hexagon. It seems to change from an 'innie' to an 'outie' for me, don't know why

Basic answer is have the crystal on a sheet of glass, fire a flash up through the crystal and photograph it - simple

Last December I posted the setup I was using then. I've rebuilt it for this year so I'm moving the glass, and not the camera. Hopefully that will give me better, and more precise, control. I tinker with the setup each year in the hope of capturing the perfect shot.

Lots more images in my Flickr Snowflakes album if you like to see more, and be sure to check out Ken Libbrecht's snowcrystals.com for all you could wish to know about snow.

Ice Storm

A couple of pics from an ice storm we had that turned the Central Pennsylvania mountains into a sheet of crystal. These are shot in the normal (color) setting.

Reminds me of the last big ice storm in Ontario in January 1998. Why do I remember that date so well? It was two months before my daughter was born and we were without power for over a week. Thanks goodness for a wood stove.

Nice thread. Here's some ice I photographed last winter when heavy winds whipped up the water before it froze.

Great idea for a theme! I love winter and outdoor photography, especially after a fresh snowfall!

You didn't even have to post the name of the lens....I could have guessed it. Lovely shot!
