Watertowers

I've seen some good photos of watertowers here, and I'm going to link to a few of the good ones to get things going - it never occurred to me that people would have built watertowers out of brick, but those pictures taken in Europe seem to suggest that's the normal thing there.

Mannheim's main sight is the watertower. (author: itshimitis)

Old watertower across frozen canal (author:newmikey)

Old Watertower Radeberg (author:dasPaul)

Esbjerg Watertower, Denmark. (author:itshimitis)

And then, somewhat more prosaically, a couple of my own, the first (twins off in the distance) near Parkersburg, W.Va. (the building in the foreground is a mausoleum), and second, a watertower behind George Washington High School, Alexandria, VA. (it used to be painted with a huge red and white checkerboard pattern so that low-flying propeller driven airplanes would notice it - back in the days of the DC-3, it was on the flight path to approach National (now "Reagan National") Airport):

They don't have the mystery of a lighthouse but are basically a similar object from a composition and gear standpoint. My father-in-law designed water systems and I so have seen many film-based photos of water towers over the years.

Watertower in Tallinn, Estonia

The shape and material of that watertower was quite ordinary a century ago.

There is a water tower to the right of the silos, but I don't know if it is functional or just a decorative theme piece.

I think that's a beautiful shot. It really captures the mood of that time of day. (I'm a "morning person", myself.)
