A comparison, of Christmas tree lighting, cameras and lenses

The first one I shot with the K-5IIs, and the DA 18-55 WR. The tree was lit with incandescent bulbs.

Notice the warm color of the light.

This second one I shot with the K-1, and M40-80 lens. The tree is lit with the new LED lighting.

Notice the cool, bluer color of the lighting.

Neat comparison. There are some colours that seem to be exclusive to either incandescent bulbs or LEDs. I grew up with the former, so sometimes I miss them with the predominantly LED displays I see.

Well the technique certainly works with the subject!

Yes, the incandescent bulbs included purple and pink, absent with LED lighting.

Thanks I believe the happy accident captured the moment better than a straight shot

Happy accidents are often like that; I'll take 'em where I can get 'em!

So does using the unique shape of bokeh created by apertures with unique shapes count as stoopit camera tricks?

If so, here is a Soligor and Industar comparison.

First the Industar 61LZ.

Neat little six pointed stars.

I have been enamored with them ever since I saw the result on the photograph of another photographer.

And now the shapes from the Soligor 35mm f2.8 M42.

Nifty little saw blades, eh?

Works for me.

IMO, not so much, but it does show the value of artificial lighting, because the subjects are very distinct, and the details are sharp.
I know so little about artificial lighting in practice, maybe if one or both lights had gels, grids, or other modifiers to create a subtle (or not) difference between the two. Maybe a shot with some motion, and one light triggered at the opening of the shutter and the other trailing to the close of the shutter? I wouldn't want to discourage your participation, so please let us see what else you come up with, I look forward to learning from your results.

Coincidentally, I intended to post that the earlier hours of sunset, along with the longer and later hours of darkness allow for more long exposure and low light experimentation. Since the weather has been unseasonably warm, I have fewer excuses not to stay out after dark and try some night shooting.

Anyone who is seeking some inspiration might enjoy the links and tips in this article

So here is one I did in camera. A very long exposure, 30 seconds, under moonlight. Notice the stars.

Thanks! I like the combination of surprise and unpredictability when I shoot like this, letting light and motion play.
