Besides what may be obvious, be specific about where.

I give up. Perhaps a rotating shoe waxing brush? Interior of a carwash?

Anyway, here's another object to ponder:

It is a magnet, inside the banjo (center) housing of a heavy truck drive axle, covered in metal slivers soaked in polluted 90wt gear lube. The truck had two drive axles, and both differentials failed about a mile or two apart from each other. I had the wonderful job of tearing it apart, cleaning everything, rebuilding the differentials, replacing the wheel end bearings and races, and putting it all back together.

Boy, you're good! The houses in our neighborhood are all on septic systems. Sometimes, depending on barometric pressure and temperature, sewer gas comes up from the tanks through the houses' vent pipes, and settles near the ground where it smells the place up. This vent cap is designed for indoor use where venting to the outdoors isn't an option. It's got a valve in it that lets air into the system, but won't let it go back out. I stuck these on my vents to eliminate the smell.

Ok, no identification of the mystery kitchen tool. I still don't know what it is.
But try this one on for size - hint - a newspaperman from the 1930's ought to recognize it.

Nut cracker, I would say. It could hold and split a walnut nicely!

Good guesses, all. But here's the real thing: it's a hot-lead linotype machine. The local newspaper bought it new, but now it sets on the sidewalk as a sort of museum-in-the-street display. Historical artifact of a bygone civilization.
I was going to say a printer of some kind, but hot lead linotype? So was it used to make the plates they printed the paper from?

Is that a linotype? Hard to tell from this angle, I've never really paid much attention to what they look like from the side. Assuming that's correct, I've never seen one this colorful--my experience was with ones in varying shades of ink tones.

edit: I see that is a linotype. I've got a slug from one here on my desk, but no pictures of it. This is the functional one I got it from though:

The Answer Is Happiness

Late yesterday afternoon...

A sympathetically "aged" iPhone 11 Pro Max image.
