Not quite. Aside from Explore, I think the shots that attract the most attention are those that have some sort of unique or novel quality about them, or present a genre shot in a very technically excellent way.
Certainly, after the culling, those photo that did not meet one of those two criteria I think I've met that standard. Considering 4 years had passed since I posted some of those photos, I had the emotional distance from the place and time to objectively evaluate them.
Your observations are apt as well. You have done a great job with the 365 this year, creative ideas, quality work and a sense of humor.
I have an idea for a few projects. One is a series of themed still life photos, but I need to gather the materials and plan them. The other is portraiture, formal informal, street, whatever I get a chance at taking, both friends and strangers.
Both projects will require me paying much more attention to the technical side of photography, including post-processing, and I expect a lot of trial and error.

I agree.

Originally posted by graeme83 I have just been having a look through my last years photos trying to select some to enter in our towns little summer show next weekend, the pressure is on as I won best in show last year and I need to defend my title!
I do find it difficult however to go back and critically review and select from my own work, there was a few back in the winter snows that stand out in my mind as well as a foggy deer scene, and I was thinking the minimal rocks in the stream that hit explore last week would be good for the black and white class.
Decisions decisions...
Belated Congratulations! Our town newspaper hosts something similar annually, I have to select my shots by mid-October. For me this opportunity provides impetus to revisit local scenes often, to think of new ways to capture the mood and landmarks that give or area its character, and to think of something my peers will not. In the 8 years I have entered, every year brings in a lot of talented locals, so I know I can't be lazy. It's a friendly competition, though, and I enjoy seeing the results even on the years I do not place in the results.

The biggest benefit of participating is the critique of each chosen photo, provided buy a very knowledgeable professional, Sam Abell. What many people read his books for, or pay to attend workshops conducted by him, he freely provides as he reviews the images, I have learned so much from him over the years, that is priceless. He also has a column in the local paper, too. Since my Flickr URL is in a column, I thought I'd clean up the site in case people do look at it.
