Maybe not the best camouflage if somebody tries to tie it!

You might want to check if the snake is venomous first, though, and even more so if this is a young specimen. At least I've been told that bites from young snakes can be more harmful than from adults as the young ones always give off full dosage, while the adults have learnt to economise. I have no idea if it's true. Is there a herpetologist in the room?

Looking down the paved pathway taking you up the incredibly steep hillsides in the Paúl valley on Santo Antão, Cape Verde.

Some sweaty climbing later we had passed through some clouds. Vale do Paúl is probably the place I've been that feels the most like a huge film set - it simply doesn't look real. We expected to see a hobbit walking by any moment. It's also one of the most beautiful places I've visited - and the people there are the definition of freindliness and helpfulness. It's a bit cumbersome to get there, though. We had to go via Lisbon to the island of Sal, then take a domestic flight to Sáo Vicente, then on by ferry to Santo Antão. Still, we do want to go back

Yup, you'd really really have to be looking down to spot that one!

I like the colours in this one a lot. Just variations on grey/brown. Not very uplifting, but I guess it does reflect the mood over there pretty well (it certainly reflects the mood over here where we may just be getting a bit of sun for the first time in three days).

Thanks! The views are breathtaking but they are not easy to capture. I would love to go back and make another try now that I have acquired better gear and considerably more photographic experience (which doesn't say too much given how little I knew then).

These images are great, they really convey the greenness as well as the rugged character. I can imagine that you'd want to return; makes me want to go there.

Thanks It's a fabulous place for hiking, but even to go to see the views would be well worth it. Knowing a few words of Portuguese will make the visit all the more rewarding.
