I spy rippled water. The dolphins were swimming in Mitre Bay, NZ, but they are not one of the two extremely rare, severely endangered species found only along the west coast of NZ. (more of these to be posted in near future). And BTW: The weather this day was abysmal, heavy mist with intermittent downpours. Just about as drizmal as it can get. Wind would clear back the mist time-to-time.

I spy more cetaceans

rare dolphins from New Zealand's South Island, these are the South Island Hector's dolphins, not the even rarer Maui found off the west coast of the North Island

________________________________

Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins

Only found in New Zealand waters, the Hector’s dolphin is one of the smallest marine dolphins in the world. It grows to no more than 1.5m [4.9 ft] in length.

Grey with distinctive black and white markings and a round dorsal fin, Hector’s dolphin is the most easily recognised dolphin species.

Two sub-species of Hector’s dolphins exist:

South Island Hector’s dolphin - found around the South Island

Maui’s dolphin - found off the west coast of the North Island.
With a population of around 100, Maui’s dolphin may be the rarest sub-species of dolphin in the world.
