A theme within a thread, even if depriving another thread of images, is sometimes fun. I recall way back two themes that ran on this thread, one for staircases, the other for people at work. Many interesting images posted for both.

So here is another mammalian plantivore.

yes - there's always the conflict between worrying about what photographers are up to and stuffing your face, but the spliiage from a bird-feeder was just too tempting

I spy another hairy vegetarian, one that's above it all.

Before the bears fouled the ritual, I used to keep bird feeders filled all year long. Eventually the bolder birds, chickadee*, recognized me and would come down, land on the edge of the small plastic bucket I used to carry seeds out and swipe a snack. I know there are people who go to the great parks in London and feed birds from their hand. The birds know them, and will ignore people nearby who are holding out seeds, but are not regulars in the park.

*same type of bird known as "tits" in Britain

FYI: Once the bears go into hibernation, I can feed the birds, but at least three times I've been too slow getting the feeders down in the Spring and the bears have made a mess of them. I hate taking down the feeders in the Spring because that is when the most interesting birds, with males in their finest plumage, are coming to visit. M always gets upset when I don't get feeders in and the bears come for a snack. Truth be told, a sow with three cubs once charged at one of our dogs who went out in her pen to challenge the bear. Only a sturdy fence saved our pet, but it needed repair. The local wildlife service (they try to radio collar and track all local bears) says that a bear will revisit a site where its found food for a minimum of five years, even if it finds nothing to eat after the first visit.

It says a lot about the sometimes sparse and patchy nature of food sources for bears that this strategy makes sense for them
