Good grief WPRESTO-There I was thinking we only have two color varieties of the stuff-white and yellow, the former being my favorite. How did they get to be so colorful?
I asked my wife the same question this morning!

FYI noelcmn & p38arover: The colorful ears are known as "Indian corn" and so far as I know are primarily used for Halloween/Thanksgiving decoration, not eaten. Notice that the husks have been peeled back and dried, unlike yellow/white corn whose husks are left covering the ear and are green when sold (otherwise the ear is too long off the stalk and therefore tough and generally not salable to any knowledgeable shopper). The colors are genetic, and an alternate use for the corn is teaching elementary Mendelian genetics. Each kernel is the union of a different ovum and pollen grain, so a single ear provides as much statistical data as large garden plot of Mendel's peas. They are very dry and will keep in storage for years, even decades.

If you look in Heirloom seed catalogs, however, you'll notice that these varieties are often used once dried and ground for making tortillas. They can be eaten boiled or roasted, but are usually tougher than the typical white or yellow varieties. There's also smaller "pop" corn varieties, that, as the name implies, are used for popping corn. Very colorful and more nutritious than white or yellow.

Thanks WPRESTO and John, very informative. Nothing like PF to get some knowledge. And Googling Heirloom Seeds shows that some of them are available in South Africa too. Maybe I'll become a farmer

I don't suppose those would be solar panels JP, which is what I would spy, but if not, I spy a roof, or roof tiles. My recollections of houses in Europe is that those would be windows.

I'd like that, my favorite food. These Solar panels are being given by government to new low-cost housing, so if it was a pasta machine-i'll worm my way to be first in the queue.

JP- skylights it is! Much needed I guess.

I spy buildings with red or orange tile roofs. FYI, an outstanding overlook of Florence, but the parking area was closed and buses were forbidden from letting passengers out. There were several police enforcing the temporary ban because of preparations for an upcoming fireworks display. Our bus stopped briefly, so I was stuck with whatever view there was through the window. Hence the streetlamp right in front of Brunelleschi's dome.
