Perhaps they are too quickly consigned to the kitchen. We had fried frogs legs in a NY restaurant (A la Forchette) many years back. Tasty, but it takes a heap to make a meal - more than chicken wings.

Escargot in garlic butter!!! We always select that appetizer at the few restaurants locally that offer. I've eaten other things that are rare or absent here in MessyChewBits: chocolate covered ants, grasshoppers & baby bumble bees (=larvae); rattlesnake fritters (delicious!); alligator tail (like very mild fish, NOT like chicken); poi (Hawaii - only useful for dipping meat, and still only marginally palatable for me); emu (yummy); bison (mostly ground - OK; always available at the local super market); pickled octopus (on sushi - like eating an inner tube); and fried earthworms (tasted like dirt). There was an ostrich farm locally supplying meat to some restaurants & markets, but it seems to have failed.

Good grief WPRESTO- had no idea you were such a gastronomic adventurer. Next time you come to Africa, make it South Africa-here you can get Mopani Worms which I have had, but only in the dried version. Like eating ash!. (google it if you are interested). Ostrich is readily available here, and I am reliably told it is very healthy too. It certainly makes the best biltong meat. Octopus was regularly on the menu in our poverty stricken home (free food from the ocean) where we lived on the coast. Dear Mom would make the most delicious Octopus Frikkadel, a long process of first boiling the poor thing in water, then mincing it for hours on end, and then made into frikkadels. The equivalent of the American Bison is of course our buffalo, which I have had, very tasty. You can keep your chocolate ants. rattlesnakes, grubs and the like. I drew the line a long time ago -immediately after those snails.

For octopus, calamari is now both popular and widely available, I get frozen breaded rings pretty regularly. Nice change from the shrimp that we have more often. Bison is OK ground, but bison steaks can be a bit dry. We have a long-standing family joke/tradition. Question: What is your favorite dish to have when eating out? Answer: Something different.

One more local frog from my files. Think I'd have to dig out and scan a chrome to get another. Considering the number of chromes - probably 20,000 or more - I'll catalog them later (HA!) - it might take a while. I like the way you can see this fellow under the water, and it's also interesting how the brilliant blue sky that day has imparted a bluish tint behind his head.
