When my Dad started working in the early 1940's he went to work at Baldwin Locomotive Works. He was given the option to work in the steam division or the diesel division. Wisely he picked diesel, but unfortunately that transition wasn't good for the company and they declined (I believe they were already struggling anyway). It would have been cool if he had worked on some of the late steam locomotives. I was 2 years old when he left to go to work for Lockheed to design commercial jets, so I didn't get the chance to really see any of the locomotive manufacture, oh well.
