Silo Art

Silo Art is the name given to the practice of painting murals on grain silos.
I can't find any reference to this practice outside Australia (but I might be wrong).
The first silo was painted at Northam in Western Australia in 2015.
There are now 35 across the country and 60 water towers have been added to the collection.
The ones posted below are in the Goulburn Valley of Victoria, all in very small towns about 15-20 minutes apart.

Tungamah - painted in 2018, the first in this area, first one painted by a woman, 60 litres of paint and 142 spray cans.
The pink and grey bird is a Galah and the brown one is a Cockatoo.

Devenish - a tribute to the servicemen and women from the district - WW1 nurse and current military medic and a member of the famous Australian Light Horse from WW1.

St James - Two local brothers sewing up bags of wheat, and GJ Coles born in St James and the founder of the Coles retail chain.

St James again - the first motorised delivery to the silo - 135,000 bags of wheat stacked in the background

Goorambat - Barking Owl, local fauna but now endangered

Goorambat again - working Clydesdales, the centre one winner of many championships, two born in Goorambat and now working in Toowoomba Queensland - the third one sired by the centre one on the property where they are working.

I've seen some interesting murals in a few cities where I've lived or visited, but these are impressive for their size and level of detail, in addition to achieving all this on a curved surface. Thanks for sharing.

Those are some really well done paintings, and very nice photos of them. I'm not sure I've saw a mural on a silo, I definitely don't have any photos of any. But I did find some on the web in the US and GB along with Australia. Interesting I found one project in Minnesota where they have hired an artist from Australia to paint there. So it looks like the artists have taken it from Australia to the rest of the word. I have seen murals on water towers and large oil tanks, nothing as elaborate as these, usually from city highways where I can't stop for a photo. It sure makes for nice looking silos. Here in the US murals on barns are occasionally seen, plus a lot of advertising used to be painted on barns, not nearly as much now, but then there are not nearly as many big barns as there used to be.

Thanks Tom. At each of the silos I visited there are information boards about the town, the artist, and the subject matter.
Perhaps I should edit my post and add a little info on the subjects...

Fantastic Bruce.
I love the four old men at Rupanyup.
I haven't seen it in person, but a photo of it was the first that I saw of silo art.
Only 27 to go!

I've seen the ones at Northam and Albany. Unfortunately they're both part of working grain sites so they can only be seen from a distance and from behind fences. I'll try and see if I've got any shots worth posting.

There were some on the Geelong cement works, visible from the bypass road. Not sure if it still there as the site was due for demolition.

That is amazing! I'm trying to imagine the logistics and support the artists' needed to accomplish these wonderful works.

I have one taken in Kimber, SA but it was taken with my Sony RX100. Am I still allowed to post it?
