I love the Shortstop blowing a bubble as the play progressed

I couldn't quite completely follow the thrown base ball across the field as I tried to pan the camera across from Second Base to First Base

The middle images in the series are really great - nailed the focus and motion and energy. I really like 2,4,5. The bubble gum is a fun shot - wish it was crisper.

The fifth is awesome with the ball in the air, although I'm a little concerned the umpire hasn't started to raise his hand to signal an out in the fourth. The last shot of the joyous pitcher is also an excellent part of the story.

thanks

being honest here:

the intentional " target "

the second base man and his actions

the unintentional targets, caught by the camera as I was trying to track the play to first base: all of the rest

multi shutter burst engaged

swinging camera while photographing

was using " single point AF ",

F2.8 used to make the safety netting between the camera and the field " disappear ", of course, you also have to live with the resulting lack of focus behind the focus point

I missed action by first baseman as the camera was aimed inadvertently to wrong place and I only got the catch, not the ball arriving at first

the batter arrived late at first, well after the throw so no " action " photographed there when the first baseman caught the ball

the reaction by the pitcher, the celebration of the double play which made the sequence, imho happened after play was over

probably should have added this photo to the original post

I'm still trying to learn and will accept all the luck I can get

Nice series of shots, Allen!! Ain't it nice to be able to catch action like this easily with a Pentax DSLR!! BTW, out of curiosity what was the reason for using Center Weighted Average metering?

do you have an alternative to suggest

remember, although I post a lot, I am no expert

so I am open to learning and am always seeking knowledge

I'm certainly no expert either but the scene with the second baseman's catch and throw to first may have been helped if you were using multi-segment metering which meters multiple zones of the sensor where as Center-weighted meters with an emphasis on the center of the sensor. Say for instance in your shot with the Second baseman your focus point was on the player right center of the scene the metering would change and probably improve your exposure a bit. Center weighted was probably metering off the grass in the center of the scene and affecting the overall exposure in the scene. I just find in situations like you have in the scene Multi-Segment Metering works better. Save your Center-Weighted metering for when the subjects will be in the center of the scene when the shutter is released unless of course you have used AE-L to lock the exposure.

Give it a shot or two, also you may want to try turning the link AE and AF points to on. Lots of different setting to consider for different scenes. I normally keep my metering set to Multi-Segment metering unless I am using spot metering. Your mileage may vary.
