minor crop and straightened the horizon (I am perpetually off by a couple of degrees)

Funny, I wonder how common that is - I do the same thing. I tilt to the right slightly - my guess is that it's because of the pressure on the shutter button. But even knowing that, I forget to apply the discipline of a "gentle squeeze of the trigger".
depends upon the camera, too, I suppose...

my X-H1 has a feather-touch button that I have to recalibrate my brain every time I pick it up ...

Funny, many of my non-tripod images show about a 1.7 degree tilt to the left. This may be political, or else the result of right shoulder damage sustained in a bicycle crash many years ago.

I constantly watch the level, but that doesn't always help. Years ago, we had a guy who's go to criticism of any image was the horizon wasn't level. The answer is there is no requirement for a horizon to be level to be a good photograph. The criteria is that the image has to look good, and be engaging. Sometimes a horizon that's out of level contributes to that.

I've been keeping my eye open for this image, since you posted your leaves....
Another "light" box style image.

minimally processed in the style of @paulh - imitation is flattery, right?
of course, this is East of the Mississippi, and there are no cottonwoods or mesquite, or dogs, for that matter, but otherwise...
