Best Images of 2021

We are coming to the end of 2021 and it has been nice to have a thread to display some of the best/most interesting photos from the last year. I never know what the appropriate number is – probably between 5 and 10. Last year it was suggested that if you do more than five to break them up between two posts for the sake of those with slower internet connections.

I hope it was a good year for all of you. COVID continued to make life challenging and I didn’t do as much travelling as maybe I would have liked, but there was still plenty of beauty close to home and beautiful sunrise and sunsets to capture.

I'll start with a first five and then add another post at some later date with another five. Ten seems like a good round number to start with.

Little Waterfall (DFA 24-70mm/pixel shift) -- this captured on the Roaring Fork Motor Trail near the Smoky Mountain National Park.

Cornfield at Sunset (DFA 24-70mm)

Barn and Sunrise (DFA 15-30mm/pixel shift)

Round Bale at Sunrise (DFA 15-30mm/pixel shift)

Open Gate at Dawn (DFA 15-30mm/pixel shift)

For those interested in seeing the threads from the last several years, here they are:

I took so few images in 2021 that it's not really that hard to pick

I recon this is not a model specific thread, so I might add few, add a KP to the two K1's.

▪ Pentax KP
▪ Asahi Takumar 105mm f2.8 (pre-set version)

▪ Pentax KP
▪ Meyer-Optik Görlitz Orestor 100mm f2.8 (early zebra with 15 blades)

M 50/1.4

FA 80-320

FA 80-320, a couple weeks and five feet apart from the image above

Thanks for kicking off this year's Best Of thread. I really enjoy both sides of this—seeing all of your selections, and the process of reviewing my output for the year.

The fallen leaves really pop to give this wonderful depth.

Love the vertical layering.

Compelling use of multiple exposure (or is that a single long exposure with the model in motion?)

I particularly like the first of these. Subtle tones and colors, abstract and "painterly".

Excellent set! The last one, with the snow and the leaves, is a wonderful reflection (in both senses) of the change of seasons.

As usual I have selected 10 of my own, so here's the first set:

I did a lot of stereo sets last winter. This is "cross-view" stereo, i.e., you need to focus closer than the actual image to get it to "snap" back into focus in stereo:

Springtime on the Eno River, where I spend a lot of time:

Fog on Scaly Mountain:

Sunset after a thunderstorm, southwest Virginia:

Evening light on the salt marsh:

I'll do one more series of five...

Blue Ridge Before Dawn (DFA 24-70mm)

Light on the Road (DFA 24-70mm)

Sunrise (DFA 24-70mm)

Sunset (FA 31 limited)

Before Dawn on Staunton River (DFA 24-70mm/pixel shift)

Thank to everyone who has contributed so far -- some great photos. This is not a camera specific thread so feel free to share whatever shots you want. It also is not a competition and so don't worry if you think your shots don't "measure up." They still can and will be enjoyed by others.

I don't know what constitutes a 'best' image but I know that there are perhaps 3 or 4 which are closest to the style I'm trying to achieve. I don't know if other people like them but I know I'm pleased with them, which is often as far as my judgement can go.

Great use of light and shadow, both compositionally and thematically.

I don't know if there's a better standard that this for us amateurs. I like all three of your selections; each stands on its own but they also connect as a coherent set.

Some excellent shots above.

Landscapes are still a work in progress for me, most of mine have been local this year and living on the coast, seascapes.

And the final theme that comes through in this years shots were all taken with the DFA100WR macro

That probably summarises my year in terms of themed best shots, as ever there's always things that don't quite fit.

As I said above, quite a thin year for me, but here are some of my (very subjective) colour favourites
