I feel to be street photography the images can not be planned, staged or askefd about before hand in any way. I dont take pictures of stangers except one time these teenagers could tell I was trying to photography a fountain and they decided to play in front of me anyways. If I did take street portraits I would take them first then ask the person(s) if it was Okay that I used them. If you ask for permission first I think it stages the shot you will take to much. I really think of street photography as a walk around and capture the beauty you see that everyone else is passing by because they're too absorbed in their own life.
i do both, with or without asking, for me its all fairgame

First day of truly Spring like weather, so I headed out with my newly acquired A 50 1.2 (which I am happy to have, though it took me many pains to get ahold of one).

India is a great place to photograph strangers. As you're walking around and you see someone you're interested in photographing, you hold up your camera, and people will either give you a little head waggle to tell you yes, or shake their head no. More often than not, you get the head waggle.

This was taken out of a rolling taxi. The composition is all wrong, but I love it anyway:

Speaking of taxis, for some reason I really liked the driver's hand:

Liked these!

This is more an experiment in night photography, but it is of a street and there are strangers, so here it is.

6x7 street shot, cropped a bit on the left and top, as there was a bit too much empty space there:

(Also looks like there's a scanning artifact across the frame. Ah well.)

I've recently bought a Lumix LX7 for wife
but now I found it a small and capable camera for street shooting.
Some shots from yesterday walk in Publika shopping mall, Kuala Lumpur
