I'm out of touch and weather doesn't help. Winter lingers on and based on forecast it won't give up anytime soon. So lazy start, but I try to get back into groove.

I guess I need a new lens that I really want to test

Finally, I finally figured out why I struggled with my color images in flickr: Darktable picked up the color profile from my wide-gamut 2nd monitor (~Adobe RGB) despite running on my primary (~sRGB). As a result, all my edits were too saturated and I often went back revising them after posting the initial edit to flickr. I always attributed discrepancies to the bright background in the forum, but yesterday's image with fairly saturated red-purple tones dispelled this theory.

OMG I actually asked someone today if I could take his picture!! O_O

- Only the second time ever that I’ve asked that of a stranger.

Turned out well. Nice cheerful guy, name of Khalil. Blessed me repeatedly when he asked what I do and I told him I’m a doctor.

Feels bad/funny though: I was walking along thinking about the monochrome theme day and then I spy this black guy in bright bright white thobe and a black jacket. Damn I want to take his picture, I thought as I walked away…

Then I decided no! I would go and ask him.

But not mention monochrome theme day…

Worked out well anyhow, and was a nice interaction to boot.

Great news! I can imagine the situation and the emotions
I asked strangers for taking their pictures a few times and it was usually positive. I was very open with my intentions so the declines were usually gentle. Having said that, I'm not a "street portrait" person although I'd like to be. People can be very interesting in terms of photography.

I agree! I've only managed to ask a couple of people dressed up in costume to take their picture. That was an easy one. I've yet to be brave enough to ask every day people. Maybe a project for this summer.

Back in the film-only days, I was at an outdoor Buddhist ceremony on an island in Thailand with my Super Program. I tried to discretely and surreptitiously take some pictures from the very back of the crowd. One of the monks saw me and started waving his arms. "Uh, oh," I thought, "I've just committed some horrible cultural faux pas." So I stepped even further back. The monk kept waving. I looked for a place to hide. He kept waving. Finally, he pointed to an area right in front of the altar. "Could he mean ...?" I wondered. Why not take a chance? So I went up to the front and took out my camera. He flashed a big smile at me. Yup, he'd been beckoning me all along to come closer.

I created a thread in the Street Phtography Group for just such occasions.

mid-month check in

it's that time of the month again - the middle....

for me, the middle of the month can be make-or-break time for a lens....

if I'm entirely bored with a lens by now - it'll be for sale soon...

so - how is your month going with your chosen lens?

Loving my 35mm macro - I had one, sold it to my brother, then recently picked up another one to go with my KP. If I only had one apsc lens for the rest of my life this would be it...

So the question is...how is your lens doing for you?

I'm loving it Shouldn't be a surprise after all these months with DFA*85...

Square theme is good, as it provides little differentation to earlier months with this lens. Still I'm not all fired up and struggle a little with motivation. Weather is finally warming up, so I hope it gets me going and I start to stroll around again.

I'm loving my DA 20-40 Limited. The zoom range suits well my everyday "style" and is just enough. The image quality is very good. The lens looks awesome I even started thinking If I should maybe sell my DA21 (!) - so yeah, I'm good this month

this one may survive - the is the early/fat version of the lens and while it is dramatically bigger/heavier than its later self, it is also much better at color and sharpness....

I am kinda torn. I thought 35 Macro would be great lens, I waited a year(!) to get it produced? and shipped from Japan as it was not available in Poland and has to be ordered. And now... it is kinda underwhelming. I mean it is pretty cool as Macro and works well for flower shots, but other then this I like 20-40 faaaar more. I kinda feel like this lens lacks "magic" of other Limiteds. It is great technically but has sort of clinical, "modern" feel.

I'll wait till I can test it fully on wild forest flowers and maybe I'll warm up to it, but as for now it is a candidate for selling.
