I was at the park walking across a bridge/boardwalk over a lake and this hawk (not sure of type) dropped out of a low oak branch onto a duck. the duck made it to the water and the hawk landed 10-15 feet in front of me. Basically a perfect opportunity to take a really nice picture of a hawk. Unfortunately, I had been taking shots of the water with a really low shutter speed and ISO, and was using a manual focus 100mm macro lens (originally went to the park to take pictures of bugs). I didn't get very good shots. I do like the one of the hawk taking off again though, and it was cool even if the pictures aren't that sharp. Both fairly heavily adjusted in photolab.

Osprey, Pandion haliaetus (pan-DIE-on hal-ih-ay-EE-tus) is a species of raptor, it is the only species found in the family Pandionidae and the genus Pandion.

"Osprey" comes from the Latin "ossifragus", meaning "bone breaker"

My Favorites, I am lucky to have a few nesting sites within a short drive, try to get out and catch them when I can.

Great thread idea Allen.

Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax). KP + DA 55-300 PLM. An awesome sight with their 2.3 metre (7' 6") wingspan.

Black Vultures

A lot of people don't think of Vultures as birds of prey, and I think that because of Turkey Vultures which are pretty timid and stick to carrion. Black Vultures though? Nah. These things are aggressive and in some parts of the country are a real nuisance because they'll prey on small livestock like piglets, chickens, lamb and calves.

I got pretty close to these guys, but you wanna be really careful doing that. No quick movements, no loud noises. When frightened they empty the contents of their stomach. I've heard the smell is horrific.

the reason I linked to a source identifying " Birds of Prey " in the first post was to settle the issue of what bird is among the " Birds of Prey " for this thread

and yes your bird is listed as one:

QuoteQuote:
Genus Coragyps
Black Vulture Coragyps atratus
some " Birds of Prey " eat only carrion while some won't eat carrion at all and some will kill fresh but also eat carrion
