Intentional Camera Movement - I like to move it

I have been getting quite experimental with my photography lately and developed an interest in Intentional Camera Movement, or ICM, photography. Best way to describe it is.. oh well, quoting from Wikipedia:

"camera is moved during the exposure for a creative or artistic effect. This causes the image points to move across the recording medium, producing varied effects such as streaking, textures, and layers in the resulting image. The central idea in ICM photography is that motion serves as the primary compositional element. Strict technical or definitional arguments remain vague in this form of photography which has a long history and is connected with many other forms of photography, such as Impressionism and often blurs genres and styles."

Based on this definition, it appears that holding the camera still when just the subject is moving is not really ICM, you have to move the camera.

I've looked for a dedicated thread but couldn't find one, so I decided to create one myself, to share my results and find inspiration in what others have done as well. Maybe the increased forum activity during the current giveaway will help this thread to grow. I'll start by sharing my first ever camera movement attempt from almost ten years ago, shortly after I had my first Pentax camera.

I love doing this with fireworks. I posted a thread on it a while back here.

Coastline by night .

Although I must admit it was bit unintentionally, nevertheless I liked the result. Does that count?

I had done a few things in the past that I liked...some intentional, some not so much...so I decided to try some ICM more recently. I even bought an neutral density filter so I could get my shutter speed slow enough in brighter light. I don't have anything new worth showing, but here's a couple from the past. The shot of the Native American guy was a combination of camera movement and subject movement. He was in a parade and I was using a slow shutter speed while panning with him as he walked by. The other shot is a picture from my parking garage. The streets were wet/icy and I was trying to capture the street light reflections. However, the shutter speed was so low that I couldn't hold the camera steady long enough to get a sharp image. I ended up liking the pic I got better than what I originally had in mind. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/2142-taomaas/albums/56-downtown-...icture207.html

What makes this shot is the grounding of the hill in the background. It looks normal by comparison of the light streaks. Could be an album cover to be honest.

It is indeed weird that the mountains remain so well defined.
My guess is that I kept focus long enough for the dark mountains, and shifted briefly the bright lights.....

Bet you couldn't do it again if you wanted to🙂very effective and the lights so straight.

Wouldn't be that hard with a tripod and pan/tilt head. May take a few tries, but should be able to replicate it with minimal effort.

Last time I tried it I've just set aperture to f/11-f/13, seems to work if there is not too much sun. I suppose I could have gone even smaller, I don't think I care about diffraction too much for this type of photography.

For those below, I've looked for some interesting patterns in the background and then moved the camera immediately after pressing the shutter.

For this one I tried to move the camera downwards but it seemed i didn't move it all that much, still I liked the result.

Here are a few from one evening at Lake Lure North Carolina. I was out in the evening and just started messing with my K-3 holding the shutter open and moving the camera. I believe I was using the Sigma 10-20. This was the result.

I also try to zoom the lens with a long exposure and get this sort of thing going on. I was shooting a local band at a local watering hole and by the end of the night I try and get creative.
