A museum exhibit: this machine was used by the worker who rode the fresh water pipeline to the western Australian gold fields checking for water leaks in the first half of the 20th century. Out for a week at a time the rider carried his camping gear and "first response" tools on the bike. There was no 'made' track alongside the pipeline. We are lucky to have gear sets and more appropriate tires these days. Brings a new facet to the term 'Fixie'.

Poor Man's Campagnolo Gracing a Waterford Paramount

Founded in the 1930s, Giovanni Galli and Co. claimed to have produced the world’s first alloy caliper brakes. Dr. Giovanni Savio, Galli's nephew was the company director from the 1970s.
By the late 1970s, GALLI presented a branded groupo, having successfully partnered with Maillard and Stronglight of France to supply certain components. The brakes, crank sets and derailleurs were redesigned and produced by GALLI in Turin. The line included derailleurs, crank sets, rims, brakes and hubs.
Palmares include Tour de France veteran Herman Van Spingel, winner of Europe’s oldest and longest classic, Bourdeaux-Paris with GALLI equipment in 1981.
In the USA, Lon Haldeman and Sue Notorangelo used GALLI equipped bikes on their record-breaking transcontinental tandem ride, and the 1983 Race Across American (RAAM)
This company's products disappeared from the marketplace in the early 1990s.

"Work" three days a week is sitting down at a desk in the corner of my apartment these days. I'm not complaining, I know it's a privilege, but I need to let off some steam first. I've been riding around for about an hour before sitting down at that desk each morning, as a replacement for the usual commute.

There are lots of other people out there on the canals with the same idea. I've never seen so many people exercising outdoors before. I guess many of them used to be tucked away in gyms. I could never understand why someone would sit and pedal in place in a sweaty, loud room when the outside world exists...

I've been puzzled by this too. Stationary bikes and treadmills are for astronauts!

I got a new bike. I committed to it just before the pandemic hit. I may have been able to cancel it and that might have been the wiser financial decision but I think I'm going to need it to stay sane.

Good for you, Matt. I just picked up a new-to-me bike as well. Mostly for cruising, it's a Giant hybrid - and yes, it helps keep my sanity!
