I started carefully riding my Schwinn to work again this week, after fracturing my elbow a few weeks ago in a crash. It gets a little better each day.

We just had our hottest July on record. There was a little break as it briefly dropped below 110° last week, and now we're back at it. The monsoon storms that normally come and cool us down a bit this time of year are nowhere to be found. The landscape is looking a little crispy.

K-5 IIs + FA31

Luckily my commute is very short. I was actually walking to work instead while my arm was in a sling. I take a circuitous route on the bike so I can at least get out of breath on the way.

Ouch! Well, I hope that you don't have any lingering effects from it. Glad that you've been able to return to the bike again.

As for the Phoenix heat and the lack of monsoon activity, that's partly a function of the heat island formed by Phoenix itself. One can track the reduction in overall monsoon activity across the last 50 years as the city(ies) has grown and clearly see that the heat rising from Phoenix is reducing the formation of storms over the Valley. My mom's been sending me excerpts from the weather like this - she says it's now 40 days of 110+ there. That's hot, no doubt about it! No wonder the vegetation is looking 'crispy'. I'm sure the saguaros are getting skinny, too.

I'm real happy to be back on the bike, too. I'm hoping I'll be able to turn my hand palm-up again eventually. Progress seems slow there, but it's only been a week out of the splint, and these things take time.

I know what you mean about the heat island. I've seen it happen in real-time on the radar during storms in the past. Tuscon gets blasted, then the storm gets to Phoenix, says "Nope!" and diverts around the city. But I don't think even Tuscon has gotten any big storms this year.

Maybe next year.

This was on the elevator door at the Denver Art Museum. I don't believe it's an Elliot Erwitt, I just don't recall who took this shot.

I finally finished my latest bike project. I bought an Italian frame from the late '90's, and did my best to keep that '90's aesthetic: shiny and bright all over, red anodized wheels, splash bar tape. It's so obnoxious, it really brings me back.

Thank you both! I feel like one of the Hot Wheels cars I had as a kid grew up and I can ride it around town.

My cousin on their ranch a few years ago. I remember this jump landed a little short.
