Barb's Old Bike

It's got a bit of rust in places, but it still gets used nearly every day after over 30 years of ownership.

Some gear doesn't wear out, it just wears in Note the soldered spokes top left.

In those days you could mix and match components.

She's still running singles/sew-ups/tubulars. Looks like they need replacing soon.

Nice shots. There's nothing like a broken-in old bike! My 20 yr old Trek (top of page) is still chugging along, too, but I haven't had to solder any spokes yet . It sees use 3 or 4 days a week, and the sprockets are worn down to nubs, but it still gets me down the road.

Whoa, sew ups?!?! My wife inherited a bike with those and once she got a flat and we realized we could get a new set of clincher wheels for the price of a new set of tires we opted for the new wheels!

But a sweet old bike for sure. I like the Campy derailleur too!

Thanks, Paul. Tied and soldered spokes were considered to be the mark of a well built, premium wheel back in the last millenium. I'm pretty sure that the bike is a lot older than Barb admits to. Those components look rather 1960s to me.

Richard.
