because bicycles are so energy efficient there is little difference in energy consumption between 'old' bikes and new technology ones, any difference only really shows up at the top level.

Yep, aerodynamic poses, chiefly.

Recumbents were banned in 1934 from racing because they were too efficient for normal geometry bikes to compete against.

They also aren't well suited to mass starts!

And let's face it, coming out of the saddle for effort ain't going to happen. ☺

You can't draft, sprint or climb on (in?) a recumbent.
Recumbents degenerate all disciplines to individual time trials. Where's the fun in that?

I'm not saying recumbent racing can't be fun. The HPV competitions are very impressive.
It's just that HPV disciplines also suffer from "F1-disease" where engineering can begin to
be as important as athletics.

--Anders.

Or if you do, you probably aren't going to make it back!

I was hired to shoot a big bike event on Sunday. 135 Miles and 9000 Ft. of climbing makes it a pretty tough day for riders. It goes through some beautiful country which made it interesting to shoot. I followed along in my car and leapfrogged with the riders all day. Not a bad way to spend the day! I had a bunch of my friends riding too so that added to the fun.
I'm still going through the photos but here are a couple.

Early morning crossing.
K-5 & DA* 60-250

Top of one of the big climbs. That's 6x Leadville 100 champ Dave Wiens in the green and 1984 Olympic Gold winner Alexi Grewal is in there too.

Used the Q to snap some details of a couple of my classic steel Cinelli bikes. The B is from c 1968, the Model S.C. from 1980

MTB selfie from yesterday. That is the town I live in on the valley floor. I loved how that storm looked and wanted a shot with it and a rider. Only had one rider handy as I was alone...
