out near Great Bend Kansas this AM taking part in this:

QuoteQuote:
. . . The Kansas Wetlands Education Center, invites you to come and witness this wonderful show during a Greater Prairie-Chicken Lek Tour. Staff will drive you to a local Greater Prairie-Chicken lek, where there is a trailer blind sitting. From the blind, you will be able to observe the Prairie-Chickens on the lek, and the guide will be there to tell you all about these interesting birds and the incredible spectacle. . . .
https://wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu/events/greater-prairie-chicken-lek-tours.html

when I did this in 2019, I never saw any of the male greater prairie chickens take flight as part of their display

QuoteQuote:
Greater prairie chickens are best known for their elaborate mating rituals. Every spring, males gather together on traditional breeding grounds known as "leks" or "booming grounds" where each male defends a small territory.

First, he raises his pinnae feathers (long feathers on the neck) and tail feathers, inflates his bright orange throat sac, and lowers his wings. Then boom! The loud booming sounds made with their air sacs can be heard over a mile away.

Then, they rapidly stamp their feet and do a stylized dance by rotating in a half-circle one way, then the other way, and make runs at one another. Males often leap into the air to cackle and attack each other with their wings, feet, and beaks.

they were doing it today though and I found it very hard to catch them at it as they would quickly pop up into the air and then land almost immediately

I did got this series

crop and pp

Thanks! Was one of not many of the series that was actually sharp. The 300 is worlds away from the PLM for that kind of stuff... but if it hits, it can be nice.

Trio of birds in flight taken on the same day last month, all with K-3 III and DA* 300, severely cropped and shot underexposed (my fault), tried to bring back something with DxO:

Eurasian Sparrowhawk

Eurasian Jay

Common Buzzard

I'm REALLY enjoying the much better burst rates and buffer in the K3III, and now with the auto-focus coming into its own too with recent firmware I'm finding myself out in the wild every weekend. This is fun, and that's what photography should be.

Rare chance to get one of these Black Korhaans in flight- they'r usually skulking in the grasslands. this one was in a dispute with another male, the two of them in the air. No time to zoom closer.

Startled a heron with breakfast just as the sun was peaking over the horizon, and I didn't have time to do more than pivot and take two shots, both thru tall grass. This was the better of the two.

Why thank you sir. The 150-450 has made me far more excited to get up before daybreak on a day off.
