Here's mine from last winter. Pretty much the same situation, the bird took off at just the right moment.

I agree, the third one is probably the best photograph but the first two make me smile the most. I love the little birds determination.
I have tried spot metering in the past but found I got more consistent results with center weighted. It could have been my inexperience at the time. I'll give it another go.
Ideally when shooting BIF, I aim for a shutter speed of 1/3200, at f8 with an ISO of less than 500 but that rarely happens and I have to compromise. I know I can't go below 1/2000 (YMMV) and from there I do my best to balance f-stop and ISO to get a good result. Perhaps if I was better at post, I could deal with the high ISO noise more effectively.
