Here are a few from earlier this summer of a Belted Kingfisher. A very quick and determined bird. Quite a challenge for me. They're heavily cropped and grainy, I'm hoping to do better.

nice shooting

Nice try. 3rd one does it for me. Try spot metering. This is all I use for birds, bugs, whatever, spot metering just works for me. And higher, or smaller f stop. Above f8 will give you more details.

This was taken for a SI challenge two years ago with Pentax F 28-80mm.

Thanks JimS. This was sort of accidental too. I was photographing him eating and the next shot, he took off. I just happened to have him in focus and the shutter speed was fast enough.
Here's mine from last winter. Pretty much the same situation, the bird took off at just the right moment.

I agree, the third one is probably the best photograph but the first two make me smile the most. I love the little birds determination.

I have tried spot metering in the past but found I got more consistent results with center weighted. It could have been my inexperience at the time. I'll give it another go.

Ideally when shooting BIF, I aim for a shutter speed of 1/3200, at f8 with an ISO of less than 500 but that rarely happens and I have to compromise. I know I can't go below 1/2000 (YMMV) and from there I do my best to balance f-stop and ISO to get a good result. Perhaps if I was better at post, I could deal with the high ISO noise more effectively.

The gulls were shot at f10, ISO400, 1/1000s. Spot metered.

I think this is my only seagull shot. It took a while to find. Heavily cropped but at ISO 160 it held up well.
